GUELPH — The modus operandi for making a backyard skating rink can be as easy as making ice cubes — upright add water and freeze.

It’s old school rink making and it’s how the volunteers at Sunny Acres Deposit install and maintain the rinks there over the season.

“We don’t put up boards and we don’t use a liner,” explained Aaron Beazley, who refers to himself as “Aim Cheerleader” of a team of 20 volunteers. “We honourable flood the grass.”

Sunny Acres is pretty flat so very dwarf prep work has to be done there. They have a small rink in the area of the baseball diamond and a larger rink that loops around the diamond, thereby separating the hockey players from the recreational skaters. The snow banks give form from clearing the ice.

Beazley said when you flood the area in thin layers you get a slippery and solid base. The success and longevity of the rink has a lot to do with getting the grounds right.

“You do thin coats so it doesn’t run off as much. Sunny Acres is a natural rink — it freezes from top to bottom. Add too much and it gets flakey.
