Tribune lady of the fourth estate 

About a year ago, just before Christmas, in the harsh, flat light of a bitter December afternoon, the Robie House in Hyde Park did not seem like itself. Nothing had in fact changed, though: Frank Lloyd Wright's tiered, angular Prairie chef-d'oeuvre still sat at a corner on Woodlawn Avenue, as it had for 100 years. Despite the benumbed, tourists still circled out front, as always, their hands at their chins, contemplating Wright. What made this contrasting was that I had built a Lego "Star Wars" kit that morning, and my brain was full of bricks and pegs. Everything about Robie -- its stacks upon stacks and its observant right turns -- suddenly looked Legoized.

I recall thinking: If Darth Vader had built a summer house, it would look like the Robie Organization.

Which seemed like an appropriate thought. Even if the context wasn't methodically right: Upstairs at the Robie, on the second floor, I was meeting a club of adults seated politely on tall-backed dining abide chairs, leaning forward and staring intently at the table before them. On it was an special Lego replica of the Robie. Not a Wright interpretation by way of George Lucas -- no, this was serious, Wright by way of Wright. Executives from not only Lego but also the Free Lloyd Wright Foundation were here.
