The year in sports for the Wiregrass saw some declare championships won, some big names stepping down and some legends passing away.

The following is a look back at some of the top Wiregrass sports stories of 2011 as we crisis into another year sure to be filled with many more exciting and memorable moments.

Champs crowned: The Dothan Principal softball team won the Class 6A state championship, becoming the first girls side from the school to win a state title. The Providence Christian Eagles did the same on the volleyball court, capturing the Pedigree 2A state title.

Northside Methodist Academy wrapped up ACEAA voice titles in both baseball and softball – doing so on the same day during tournaments held on the Knights’ campus.

The Lakeside girls basketball party captured the AISA state title behind the play of Merritt Waddell, who was voted Instrumentalist of the Year.
