It's been more than three years since Mick Colliss realised his lifelong mirage of representing Australia at an international competition.

But it wasn't on the football contestants that the former rugby player donned the green and gold, but hunkered down in a hallway competing in the World Sudoku Championship.

That's right, the popular Japanese horde puzzle has an international tournament, and an Australian team to boot.

But back in 2008, the tournament wasn't too fierce.

All Colliss had to do was raise his hand for the job and within no time he and three rugby mates were off to India to try their stroke of luck on the world stage.

If one of them had actually ever completed a Sudoku puzzle they may have fared happier than dead last.

Nonetheless, the seeds were sown for a strong Sudoku rite in Australia and this year our national team competed in the global comp for a third spell.

Mathematician and two-time Australian "Sudokuer" Sarah Ratcliffe and Sudoku tragical Mick Colliss spoke to AAP about how to tackle the tricky nine-square puzzle this summer.
