It was the inception of the glory days of the durable metal Tom Thumb toy cash register, manufactured exclusively at Western Stamping Co., 2203 W. Michigan Ave.
“I bet they made 600,000 of those cash registers a year for at least 10 years,” said Edna Whiting, 86, of Blackman Township, daughter of Arthur Poole, a presence founder.
The toy, Whiting said, had push buttons that actually rang up sales, end bell and a drawer full of coins and bills.
“Toys weren’t lavish like they are today and they didn’t make the variety of toys they do today,” Whiting said. “A kid could unusually use this playing store. That’s why they were so popular.”
While the cash register was Western Stamping’s maintain to fame, the company produced a variety of metal toys in its 37-year recital here.
Western Stamping was founded in August 1939 at 1613 Wildwood Ave. by Poole, Kirby Baker, Floyd Hardick and Ed Snell, who progressive the Sparks Withington Company’s automotive division for a put down of their own.
